Hey all -
On Thursday, July 6 we would like EVERYONE to appear in front of the King County jail at 5th & James at 1:30 p.m. to support Zack as he goes into his second hearing at 2:30 p.m.. At this hearing, the prosecutors are supposed to announce whether they will press charges. There is a small chance that they will ask for more time and another hearing and that no decision will be made Thursday. (We're learning that this doesn't work so nice and neatly like it did in L.A. Law.)
Regardless, the King County Sheriff's office and the prosecutors need to know that WE WILL NOT BE SILENT about this incident. The coverage in the press has broght new witnesses out of the woodwork.
Please dress in professional attire: slacks and button-up shirt for men; skirt or slacks and blouse for ladies. This will be a very small courtroom, in fact the same one as his bail hearing. It will only seat about 30 people. There will be a glass partition between the court and the public so we will not interact with them. No witnesses will be called and our attorney will probably not speak either. It will be very brief. The media is being asked to appear and may interview people in front of the building. Our attorney will make a statement after the hearing.
Again, this will be a brief hearing, but the importance is in everybody showing up as a form of solidarity and telling King County and the prosecutors that we are a critical mass of a different kind.
Please pass this info on to all other members of our community and thank you all so much for your help!

Also, if you plan on speaking to the press, please do your best to come off as a coherent, educated and informed member of society. The last thing we need is the press coloring us as a bunch of mouthbreathing drunks that just happen to ride bikes.
So basically, do your best to not look like who we really are. |

I should be able to make it, at least for a little while. Kudos to EVERYONE for pulling together to help each other out. It feels really good to know that I moved to a place that has such strong community.
To being there when it counts..*cheers* |

Remember, you don't have to answer any of the Press's questions... only if the questions actually seem relevant to you.
Best to have your statements prepared (at least in mind) ahead of time, and if you can think of some really tidy sound-bites you can feed them, that's good too.
If they approach you, no matter what they ask, you can just give them your message and leave it at that.
Rhyming sounds bites are fun too... and easier for press-hounds to remember ... ;>)

SUPER nice showing at the court today!! We had no less than 50 people looking sharp outside (not counting the press, who were there in droves... including KUOW radio --> possibly airing that tomorrow morning; and a TV camera [where from? anyone know?], the Times, the Stranger, and the P-I ... did I miss anyone?)
The scene inside the courtroom was very matter-of-fact and business-like... quite boring. BUT...
The Basic Result is that they have DECLINED TO CHARGE ZACK at this time !!!!
However they are reserving the right to press charges within the next two weeks ... after that, the status of the case changes, but I'm not certain how those details work out exactly. Perhaps Jill,.. can you explain the details?
So Zack is free, and likely to remain that way.
And it looks like this has sparked a shitstorm in the policing community... My uneducated guess is that they aren't pressing charges because there is (a) a dispute about KC's jurisdiction in the matter, and (b) probably an internal investigation inside the KC Kops as to what our unidentified Koppers actually did, ...and whether or not they actually have a case they can press (especially vs. so many witness statements... )
So... NICE WORK to everyone who gathered statements and got so freakin' organized so quickly! The Press was impressed even...

Here's a nice convergence: Elsa (Ilsa?) said that Ron Sims was spotted purchasing a BICYCLE at Gregg's Greenlake the other day...
...perhaps we should invite him and his KC underkover kops to come join us for Mass
;>)

| While we were waiting to get in (I was at the back because I figured people who actually know Zack should have the chance to see the hearing firsthand), a lawyer who was leaving the building after an earlier case stopped by and asked what was going on. When I explained, she said it's significantly more people than she's ever had at one of her cases, and that this is great because a dignified show of support really does influence outcomes. |

Agreed 100%. From everything I know about Ron Sims, I would keep voting for him. And now, he has a bicycle! Things just keep getting better...

Ok, this is weird...
Looking in my Slingshot Organizer today, I noticed this historical note for
Thursday 6 July:
2005 GW Bush falls off bike by crashing into cop.
The cosmic conincidences are really piling up. |
