"Pull up your pants or get off the boat"

We laughed so hard when we heard that!

October came back safe and sound. Dropped off our vagabond crew right as the sun set and the rain started.

Fun times!

That was a blast. I am tired and expect to be sore tomorrow but I am so sad I have to wait a whole year to try that again.

I'm all for more Bainbridge riding, personally. There's even a couple of places suitable for bike camping.

Yeah, really, you can ride Bainbridge any time. There's even an extra hill you can add to the loop. And if you get bored, there's always the rest of the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas to explore.

Thats true but there won't be hundreds other people and I wouldn't be racing. It will be a whole year till I will be in those circumstances again. sad.

oh and my highlights: 15 minutes into the race trying to find a bush to hide behind to strip off my thermals I had under my clothes. Taking about 20 people the wrong way off the course for what felt like 5 miles (Larabee said was more like 1 at most).

Good fucking lord that was a kick in the balls for me. It's probably my own fault for not training or not riding at all.

Good times!

Agreed - what a great fucking ride.

33.3 miles, average speed 14.9mph, 2hrs 15mins, max speed 44.8mph

I made out like a champ in schwag.

Holy fuck my legs hurt.

Holy fuck next year I'm cheating too.

Holy fuck that was fun.

Holy fuck I hate it when my name gets drawn (nearly) last.

Man, i have fun on P83 rides.

Also: Long train ride. Mooning October. BTAH showing up. yelling at miles to get fenders. Calling Denny "horse" because he was pulling. Thanks to Sonadei for the nice shirt, and Kore for the lead pipe downhill bars, and the traitor guys for being there and having fun.

victory as always. and as always, not enough chili, not enough beer, so many hills. weather cooperated though, fuck yes.

i wonder how long that apb on ben will be in the system?

'unidentified' photos should be posted over at marathonfoto.com soon enough. i think last year we had simple hax to get in.

I scored the Clever Cycles wool cap. It has earflaps and makes my bald head happy.

Thanks to Derrick for putting this circus on, master chili makers Shannon and Chris (moarplskthx) and to all the schwag-ifying sponsors, especially those who rode with us!

woo, fun day. thanks for everyone that helped out

as always, we'll have to drastically increase the amount of chili next year to 7 so of those buckets. i think by us being conservative on eating everyone got atleast one bowl.

we went through about 200ish dollars in beer (not counting donated booze), ill try and have more on hand next year so we dont have to do several store runs., the budget and livers look like they are going to be able to support it.

possibly new location in a much more open space next year. the harbor master was getting a little angry with us.

if you got a prize, try and send the manufacturer a thank you, you can link to them off the first page and find their contact info

im crashing.

Dr. Scott Robinson provided some amazing highlights on the ferry ride back. The best might be hitting on the teenage girls and their mom "in my professional opinion, you're fine. can I buy you ladies a sprite?"

Quote of the day:
"That captain was Johnny-on-the-spot, we only had our pants down a few seconds before he got on the PA!" -Dr. Scott

Thanks to Derrick's mom for putting on an awesome event.

I would just like to say that when we fired our "broadside" during that exchange, our captain not only didn't ask us to hoist, but joined in and then made us tea and fed us cookies!

Best captain ever.

That was really fun, in a -holy shit- they said it was hilly, but will the hills ever stop- sort of way. From what i could tell, there was very little friction between the two groups, and despite our smaller numbers, there was a .83 presence throughout the ride. Clearly a lot of planning went into this. Yay FHR!

The lower friction was great. Did anyone have issues with Cascade people on the ride? No one said anything to me, or even asked about the pirate flags.

I really enjoyed it, but also enjoyed getting away for the crowds a few times when I took different roads or trails. My mother-in-law used to live on Bainbridge and I'd explore the island a lot by bike. It was nice to get back to some spots that weren't on the route and which I hadn't visited in 5 or 6 years (especially the Grand Forest).

I never got any negative attention. Lots of args and hey a pirate!

I did get stuck pacing a pack of douches. Like the dudes from the frat that are the bad guys in a movie.

Thanks to Derrick and everyone else who organized that. One of the best rides I've been on. We should do that route again in a few months.

I have no idea what my stats were, but I finished the in about two and a half hours not taking out the 10 minute piss break and the 10 minutes I spent being lost at the end.

I kept a decent pace but kept getting stuck behind groups of Cascaders riding four or five abreast.

The weirdest thing was that I got all giddy when I saw the big-mother-o-hills around the 18 or 20 mile mark, stretching up there into the trees forever and ever. I shifted into my big chainring, accelerated past a lot of people and started yelling "consume the unworthy!"

Also Ben will steal cigarettes he finds laying around, but I think cigarettes are officially properties of the state on our rides. There is no stealing, only misappropriation, which is smoking without drinking.

Oh, and Matthew lied. Lots of cute Cascade 20-something girls, but ours are cuter. I think he just rides too fast so he ends up in the sausage pack.

My wife seemed to have more pirate in her than I did. Somehow she accidentally the whole south part of the island, all the while riding by herself and following what she thought was the Chilly Hilly signage.

The weather was kind enough to us even though today and Saturday may have been a spot nicer. I found a long sleeve thermal, and a windproof vest worked well for me, so I could zip up to go down and zip down to go up. Luckily the rain jacket wasn't needed and the dry layers stayed in the pannier till the finish.

Bainbridge dirt sounds fun, I'd be game to hit up some of those trails on another weekend.

Also, thank you everyone who helped me make the sailboat-mooning-experience come to life.

Andre, all you had to do was ask and someone would have put a little more pirate in you. ARRRGH!

I'm with you on this. Even day rides are obviously not out of the question.

Gretch...

you rule

I talked to this cute Cascade girl training for a triathalon for a mile or two - she was curious about the pirate flags. She then proceeded to leave me in the dust on the second steep ass hill.

The hills were steep but not terribly long at least. The hills that kill me are the ones at half that grade and go on for 20 miles. But I didn't walk up any of them., and passed a lot of puking Cascaders at the top.

Cascade does wonders for keeping LBS in business I am sure. I saw so many mechanicals, mostly flats and dropped chains, but I swear I heard gears being sheared off after hard shifts at the climbs. One poor woman who road the ferry back with the bulk of us had her rear derailleur sagging midway between the bottom bracket and the rear drop out. I don't know if her hanger came off or what.

Since you and Vaticdart both mentioned revisiting Bainbridge Island I'm going to suggest an alternative.

I'd like to head out to Vashon. I haven't been there in about a decade, and I remember the riding being at least as nice as Bainbridge. There is more dirt than BI too, so it would be a good mixed surface exploration type thing.

Maybe a Saturday ride in a month or two.

I rode the Vashon Island mtn bike/horse trails with Aaron a few years ago. It was pretty awesome and I've wanted to go back ever since.

As long as I can handle it on 28 mm touring tires, I'm down. The gravel road up to Green Mountain on the July 4th camping trip last year was a bit much. Which is to say it would have been a bit much if my bike had been unladen, but with 50 lbs of camping gear it made me quite unhappy.

I saw, and I asked.

"My derailleur was just barely touching my spokes. so I rode anyway. Must have gotten caught up."

FHR was great! Thank you to everyone who hung-out with and put-up with my dog for the afternoon. And thanks to the organizers!

And a very special thanks to Gretchen for instigating the group mooning. It warms my heart.

Also, we should definitely go to Vashon.
