This is the thread to sticky. I'll keep this front page updated with the latest info.
Date: 7/21-7/22
Sailboats (launching from wherever):
* Alex +6 (Christine, Lee, Caroline, Monica, Greg, Meg)
* Bo Ttorff +4
* Cass [+n?]
Kayaks (launching from Alki):
* Derrick and Ainsilie
* Justin and Talia
* ChristineBean
* Kyleen
* RyanW
Delta Force (launching from Alki or Vashon):
* Scott +1 (Fred)
I will monitor VHF 16 (hailing), and 69. I'll loan a handheld radio to the kayak group. Kayaks launch together from the south end of Alki point. Note that there will be a half knot current (very light, but there) pushing you guys north at launching time. Please stay together, it is the best way for kayakers to be safe.
We normally camp on the north edge of the island at the WWTA sites (legally only open to paddlers), but since we are motor and sail heavy this year we may move to the south end of the island (more privacy, better anchorage, but a longer walk to the bathroom). If one of the sailboats can get over there early and grab a mooring bouy that would be awesome. Maybe it'll be me if I can get my crew motivated. |

wasnt there a bathroom right at the southern camp location? memory tells me there was, but memory has been known to fail me.
i liked that spot. didn't have a sandy beach, but the two camp spots there were remote enough they let us be a little louder, plus the walk to the big grass park area wasn't far for games and sunshine time |

| I am going to see if I can get some homebrew bottled up and haul it along. Alternatively, anyone interested in taking a keg over on their boat? We can coordinate. Might be two 1/2 full kegs. Gotta check on the levels. |

I have 3 gallon kegs that are legal without a permit (5 gallon ones require a permit in a state park last time I checked). I also have a paintball based CO2 system if someone can fill the canisters.
I'm likely very tight on space due to having 7 people+camping gear on a small boat, but maybe we can find space.
Ben: exactly. and you should come. |

Alex, I think I could rig up a system to fill a 3 gallon keg (ball lock, I'm assuming) under pressure. When in doubt, more hose clamps!
Once I get a good idea as to when I can get back out to Granite Falls (where the brew setup is), I'll bug you to see if I could pick up one or two of those 3-galloners.
And also, I have at least one of the small CO2 dongles for quick pressurizing too. I saw your paintball one about a year ago - that's a nifty setup! |

| I'll try to make sure that I'm drunk and illegally cutting driftwood late at night and ask for him to shine a light on it. Scott's a pal and will keep me out of trouble and will remember to conjur up your name... |

We should do a kayak practice night again for those who are paddling over. I'll show you how to do a paddle float rescue and an assisted rescue and then we'll practice them a few times.
Wednesday nights are generally best for me, but I could also do a weekend. I could maybe do a Tuesday, but I'd hate to miss duck dodge. How are the 11th or 18th?
Are the only paddlers Christine, Justin, Talia, Derrick, and Ainslie? |

I believe you can add Ryan and Kyleen to the kayaking list.
Weekends are pretty booked at this point, so during the week works best. Wednesdays are fine for me (any weekday, really), but I have to double-check with Talia. |

Awesome to see the kayak list growing.
Same spot works for me. The paddling there was nice, the only downside is the longer carry from the parking to the launch.
Let's call it for Wednesday the 18th? The 11th would be fine too if that is better for folks. |

18th doesn't work for Talia.
11th works for both of us. If that works for everyone else, that's our preference. |

I've been updating the attendance list, but I'm not going to ack each one. Joe: Sorry that the injury keeps you out of the trip, I wonder if one of the other sailboats has room for you?
I can do the 11th, and since Talia is borrowing one of my kayaks I'd prefer to have her around for the skills practice. |

So is this where people are planning to camp?
How much tent real estate is there on the shore? I'm considering the living social deal but wanna make sure camping space is available. |

we always play it by ear. that southern area is a double campsite and we've stayed there before and it has enough space for us. more private.
the kayak spot on the north end has lots more space and is easy to get if we get there early. has a nice beach, but we get heckled more for being loud there.
boats that go over friday usually end up basing where we stay depending on where they get moorage buoys, we all end up being pretty fluid about the camping situation until we pull in saturday morning. best bet is to call one of us and find out what we settled on
if the boats could bring a couple packs of firewood that would help us all out a lot wherever we end up kayakers can pack in a little bit in each boat too |

The sites that have been used on the 3 trips that I've attended are the WWTA sites on the north end (facing Bainbridge). They are super nice, although I feel guilty if we have too many non-paddlers staying there.
I've been curious about the south camping area that you indicated because it is more private and the anchorage looks better than the west side. The downside for sailboats that Derrick pointed out is that the current can pick up between Blake and Vashon on the south end.
Does the Living Social deal allow you to go one way on Saturday and come back on Sunday?
The only area to really avoid is the west side of the island towards the north. That is where the motor boats hang out and it is loud, tightly packed, and full of kids. Or that is my impression.
We'll have cell phones and I'm sure that someone can pick you up from anywhere on the island by boat too.
Derrick: We'll bring some firewood, hopefully I can find some room on the boat to store it. It's going to be interesting with 7 or 8 people on our little boat. |

The Southern spots are the better spots IMO. The Kayak spots to the north/northwest are great, but anyone not in a human powered craft (think kayak) isn't allowed to camp there. That means anyone who gets a ride on a sailboat (Alex, Cass & Co), zodiac (Fred and I), or fishing boat (Jake & Co) can't camp in those spots technically.
And yeah, the ranger comes out and counts kayaks and tents to see if they line up.
Last time I went out we used Beard's dinghy to get to shore and then hiked to the north/northwest site. If others with kayaks hadn't shown up they'd have given us the boot - they almost did anyhow. Apparently dinghy and foot powered aren't what they mean by human powered craft.
We're all gonna die. |

| Talia and I are in for sure. Currently, we can make it as early as 6:30, but we can do a little bit of schedule-rearranging to make it 5:30 if needed. |

Okay since you want a fucking timeline.
Starting at 6pm, it takes me 45~60 mins to walk away from my desk, change into bike clothes and pedal from Harbor Island to my apartment on Capitol Hill. If I haul balls I can break down all my boat shit (because I've been working on it), pack it up and load it into the car, drive down, find parking, re-inflate it, mount the motor and get into the water in another 45~60 mins.
If I drive it takes about 30 mins to get home - sometimes more, sometimes less - depends on the traffic - so I can save a little time there.
Now shut the fuck up. |

Tonight isn't a surprise, you could have planned ahead...
I'm bringing 2 or 3 kayaks (I'll shoot for 3 if I can fit one without a proper rack) and associated gear. If I can get home a bit early I might even bring 4 kayaks. I'll be there at 6, but it is okay if others are a bit later. I need to be home at 9, but I'm happy to play on the water in between.
Derrick: I'll try to remember to grab you a radio. |

Yeah my bad. Once I realized it was happening at 6pm at 3am the day of, I could have totally prepared. What was I thinking.
Whatever. I'll get down there or I won't. I'm trying to. I flubbed the event time, no question about that part of it. Don't mean to sound grumpy - I'm not, thanks for coordinating - but there's simply no way I'll get there before 715~730. I'll be there as soon as I can. Hopefully y'all will still be there. |
