Bremerton or Bainbridge ferry? 45 miles from either of those opens up some fun spots!

I'm totally in this for the pit toilets and non-potable water. Hopefully, I'll have a flashback to SERE, paint my face with moss and mud, kill a rabbit to eat it raw, and wake up in the middle of the night in hysteria about being captured and taken to a POW camp.

Or maybe we can just ride bikes. That'd be cool too.

Sooo.where's the route? I will not be able to make the 9:30 ferry Saturday, so I plan on being a later arrival. I'm busy in a race in the morning.

Scouted today, it's all good.

See that little kicker over yonder? Coming down it on the way in I maxed out my freshly-cleared speedometer again, and sustained well over 40mph for a solid mile of tidal flats at the bottom. Got chugging similarly at 40+ in several other places too, and spent some serious quality time at 35mph. Max speed on the dirt descent was 32mph.

32mm slick tires recommended but if you can pick a line and maybe walk one very short section you could do fine on 25-28s. Just like a Thursday ride.

Except for part of the gravel climb and the (very optional) kicker on the return, it was all big ring climbing for me, meaning mortals shouldn't have trouble running out of gears or anything. The route doesn't have nearly the magnitude of trouble of the last two iterations. Still don't bring a two-wheeled trailer.

The last stop is 5 miles and 700ft of climbing from the finish, a small convenience store with decent selection of food + beer at decent prices, and a liquor store next door.

If y'all can refrain from whipping your sister with your seatbelt you won't be made to take this shortcut over a hill:

don't you make your father pull over and come back there

Nice writeup!

I think the TOS rule that says "don't follow Ben up a mountain" should be appended to say something to include Ben and his "shortcuts".

I enjoyed Ben's route to Green Mountain via the logging trails. It was a little difficult, but different and no one died. Triple D's!

Hat tip to Fred for the teaser pics. Next weekend, woot!

For the worry-worts and non-believers amongst us, here's the NWS forecast for our destination and elevation.

that's one quad south of our destination and more than double the elevation — it's really a forecast for the east flank of Mt. Turner, not down in the valley where we'll be (sheltered from the wind).

it's not really possible to get a good usgs forecast given the peculiarity of the site with a steep little choad of a mountain between us and the water

besides, yesterday's forecast was also "A chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 55." and it turned out terrific.

This route looks awesome, I've been really curious about that area. However I have to nominate myself for the yes but nos, bringing my BC count under 50% (I went on 2, 3, 4, missed 1, 5, 6, and now 7), which sucks. Such is life.

Dear Ben,
I have to work all weekend so i will be unable to attend.

Best of luck,

Ryan

P.S. I hope it rains on all you assholes all weekend and that you all get arrested for illegal camping and drinking in public.

Ben, I'm coming.

Kevin, I'm a 'maybe' for Friday departure based the forecast at the end of the week. If sun/monday look nice i'd possibly be up for extending the trip that direction too.

Dudes, I might have to drive because I'm getting more bees this weekend. I have to pick them up and put them in their new house before I can come out and ride bikes.

Soooo, I could probably drive up some beer. How close can I drive to the camp spot?

100 feet. more info in the original post.

or if you want to ride but leave a bit later you could always drive up to the edmonds ferry and ride from kingston to the hood canal and then follow the route.
we prolly won't make it to the hood canal until early afternoon anyway.

i am also thinking of doing this.
it'd be the first loop BC.
it'd be ~74 miles, but no big hills at all.

74 miles after riding the day before and partying into the night, what could go wrong?! Sounds tiring... but feasible.

Also, heads up if the loop does happen, 101 (Olympic Hwy) gets a bit twisty with skinny shoulders/blind corners along Hood Canal, may be a little sketchy with lots of bikes.

I'm ticked that I can't ride with everyone. Riding on the Olympic peninsula is always fun and the traffic is relativity chill.

Also I'll be bring some safety infused rice crispy treats.
