heard and acknowledged. beer cans, sticks and stones will NOT break my bones, because i'll be using my spiffy new german headlight and will see them coming a mile away.

and really, if you guys just get the 2011 blake island choir to give us a couple rounds of "fuck her gently" right around ten pm or so we should be able to follow it in.

Is there a crew heading up Friday afternoon that I could tag along with? I don't mind riding all the way up there, but not sure I want to do the overnight ride. (I have done that enough.) I also have a minivan that I could load up with bikes/people if that helps. But it seems more fun to bike all the way.

Sweeny, you talked me into it with the idea of the meteor shower.

prepare your golf claps.

i'm still camping, but due to some last minute work travel, the overnight century is just not a possibility this time. sorry to anyone who was considering it.

joby and i are heading up with mr. fatasian and jeff on saturday morning. there are silver linings including not falling asleep at the campfire, the use of my legs the next day, and for the first time, the opportunity to do some hiking with those of you who are into that.

It's tour day! Team Oso is all organized and we're going to squeeze into my car (which carries lots of bikes better than lots of people) at 3pm and head north.

If you get there in the afternoon you'll likely be the first to arrive. I'm guessing we'll get up there around 5ish, plus or minus two hours.

Looks like I will be heading out this afternoon. I have space for at least 2 more people, plus bikes. If anyone needs a ride, let me know.

Nice large map for a section of the Suiattle we will be in (these are hard to come by online, anyone have a good method for finding free detailed maps like this?)

For those hoping for a day hike Saturday, I propose we go up the Downey Creek trail right by our camp site (upper right corner of map).

Heading up there in a few hours, cheers!

Downey Creek Trail description

"This trail is the access to Bachelor Creek Trail #796, Bachelor Meadows, Cub Lake and the Dome Peak area. The trail starts on the north side of FR #26 opposite a large parking area, on the east side of Downey Creek just beyond the Downey Creek Bridge.

The trail makes a few switchbacks and gains 300 ft. elevation as a warmer-upper, but from then on proceeds with a gentle slope and a few ups and downs in between. After half a mile, the trail enters the Glacier Peak Wilderness.

The trail stays above Downey Creek for most of its length, but does meet the creek and follow it for a few hundred yards at several scenic places. The old growth Douglas trees in this area are impressive, but can constitute formidable obstacles when fallen and blocking the trail.

At one point opposite an avalanche chute, dense forest has re-grown where it was wiped out by an avalanche thundering down from Green Mountain - the momentum carrying he debris high up on the opposite slopes.

The trail crosses five tributaries to Downey Creek before reaching Bachelor Creek at 6.6 miles, elev. 2400 ft. The last of the five creeks (the one draining Downey Lake and Pilot Lake) may be difficult to cross in the spring because it carries a lot of water.

There are four possible camp sites along the trail before reaching the location of the former shelter at Bachelor Creek (mp 6). All on the west side of the trail. The quality of the campsites improve increasing distance from the road. The first flat spot at mp 1.6. is not much of a camp site, at a ridge just before the first tributary crossing. Two larger camp sites are at mp 3.0 and 3.5 and the best one is small and hidden right by the bank above the creek at mp 4.0.

In case you wonder what happened to Downey Creek Campground shown on old maps, it got washed out by high water in the creek. Remnants of the campground and an outhouse can be seen on the west shore of Downey Creek. There are two walk-in tent camp sites in the old campground above the road and one messy site below the road on the west shore of the creek.
Driving Directions:
Drive Highway 530 north from Darrington or south from Highway 20 near Rockport. Turn east on FR #26, the Suiattle River Road and drive to a parking lot on the other side of Downey Creek bridge, approximately 20 miles from Highway 530." (Road is blocked about 11.5 miles in now, we'll bike the rest of the way)

REI has awesome maps, and so might mytopo.com, but the key word was "free" ; )

How is this different that using Google Maps? Too bad it doesn't show trails, only roads. But thank you for lookin.

To get the map I posted above, I just searched Google Images for "Suiattle Trail Map" and dug through a bunch of pages for 20 minutes until I found that image; which I guess shouldn't be posted for free online...? Seeking nerd support to find a website with a bunch of these!

When you're using mytopo there's an obvious "print from your computer" link below the gmap-style browser. Yes, you can also pay them to print a big high-res map without watermarks on waterproof paper. But you cam print a totally usable map on your own for free.

Use the obvious menu at the top right to switch to topo mode.

Hi all! I promise to do a real intro post & get an avatar ASAP, but in the interest of not missing out on Suiattle: I'm Heather ("Other Heather"/"Laser jockey"). Been to a handful of Tuesday and Thursday rides, went over my handlebars last night, etc., etc.

If anyone going up this evening or Saturday morning has space for me & my bike, I'd love to go!

I'm back from Suiattle, had a great ride around the Mt Loop with Katy, Jessica, Lee and Jimmy on Thursday and Friday, and a nice time at Suiattle last night.

Downey Creek! The road is easier to ride than ever, the singletrack section near the start is gone and you can just ride right over the Downey Creek bridge.

Holy awesome, can't wait to do it again.

Jessica shredding gnar descending the Mtn Loop Hwy from Barlow Pass.

My camera takes crappy night time shots, but this also more accurately reflects my brain function at the time.

Russ and Jeff.

Bikes for camping in the woods. I got 23, I think that's everyone?

From my flickr

PS: I have bigger/slightly better versions of all of those, plus a bunch I didn't post. If you want something specific please ask.

i was there and i'm still team jealous of those who could stay the whole weekend.

although everyone who didn't ride the mt loop highway should be team jealous that they didn't go on the better point83 ride for last thursday night.

missing both should put you into team jealousist!
